Quoting Ernest Hemingway “ It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best”
Moving amidst nature, with the cool breeze hitting my legs, as I pedal through the roads unseen… nothing provides me more eternal pleasure. The landscape, terrain and the alluring altitude, in addition to the lush green forage, provides a perfect heavenly experience. Apart from the joy derived from cycling its the ticks and techniques of riding various types of bikes is what has attracted me over times and and subsequently expanded into my passion of collection of 8 bikes which includes road bike, fat bike, tandem, folding bike, penny farthing, unicycle, chopper and a recumbent trike, all of which are unique in their own kind.
The first on the list is a FANTOM FAT BIKE with a huge 4" tyre which literally can conquer any rugged terrain. Due to the weight of the bike, uphill requires a lot of effort but that compensates with the high speed rolling during downhills. This is the best bike for developing core and stamina and weight loss. The second one is the FANTOM TANDEM BIKE which enables two co-riders. The front rider is called the pilot as he has the control of the bike (in terms of the gear changes, brakes and direction) while the rear one is called the stoker who needs to pedal to provide the extra push and be responsive to the choices made by the pilot. Having said that while it seems easy, its quite a daunting task to ride it for it requires perfect sync and coordination to ride it smoothly. The next on the fleet is a GIANT ROAD BIKE popularly called the racing bike with thin tires. These kinda bikes are meant for long distance rides for they are light weight and have smooth narrow tires with high pressure favouring lower rolling resistance. The dropped handle bars allow the rider position to be leaned forward and downward, thereby reducing the air resistance. The fourth one to grace the club is a UNICYCLE with a fat tyre mostly seen in circus. Its a single wheel bike and requires lot of persistence to master the skill of riding it. It offers a great physical challenge and a complete mental focus. Fifth in the line is PENNY FARTHING which is actually the fore father of the modern day bicycle with a bigger front wheel and a smaller rear wheel. They were called penny-farthing because they reminded people of two British coins, the penny and the farthing. There are no gears and no effective brakes, on top of that all the weight of the rider lies on the front axle. All these makes riding penny farthings very difficult for a long distance. The sixth member is a customised RECUMBENT TRICYCLE (human powered three wheel bicycle). Recumbent tadpole or reverse trike is a recumbent design with two steered wheels at the front and one driven wheel at the back. Steering is done through the handle bars linked to the front wheels axle. Seventh one is a single speed CHOPPER with a thin front tyre and a wider rear tyre, long padded high-back seat and high rise handle bars. The unusual frame similar to a motor bike is quite appealing. The final on the list is DAHON FOLDING BIKE which is designed to fold into a compact form, facilitating transport and usage. The advantage of this bike lies in its smaller wheels which provide potential for more speed, quicker acceleration, but is very unstable at rugged terrain.
Owning a bike and taming it as per its requirements and pulling it off gracefully on the road is what gives me satisfaction and relaxation.
